How do I know if my Hilux Injectors are bad?

Recognizing bad Hilux injectors is key to maintaining your vehicle's health. The main symptom many see is the heavy engine knocking when the engine is cold. Other symptoms can include poor fuel efficiency, difficulty starting the engine, uneven engine idling, and noticeable smoke emissions.

If your Toyota Hilux exhibits any of these signs, it might be time to consider checking your injectors. Don’t wait for a complete failure; if you suspect an issue, please see this informational page on how to diagnose your injectors - or click here to find your local Diesel Geeks affiliated repair centre.

Why do Toyota’s ‘cold knock’

Toyota’s issues with the sometimes horrendous cold knock is actually a result of their electrical profile choice in firing the injectors. Most manufactures send a upto 20amps to initially fire the injector, then drop to a 5amp hold. To close the injector, they then reverse the current flow, thus changing the electro-magnets polarity and physically forcing the injector shut.

Toyota HIlux injectors do not get that same signal. Essentially they just allow the injector springs internally to close the injector. This is the problem in our opinion. To learn more about this situation that is specific to Toyota, see our blog at Diesel Geeks.

How long do Hilux Injectors last?

Hilux injectors, when maintained properly, will last between 150,000 to 200,000 kilometres. However, this lifespan can be dramatically affected by factors such as fuel quality, driving habits, and the general maintenance of your vehicle. Regular checks and services are crucial to ensure the best performance and longevity of your injectors. At Diesel Geeks, we offer genuine Denso injectors to keep your Hilux running smoothly.

What year 1KD Hilux have injector problems?

Certain models of the Toyota Hilux, particularly those manufactured between 2005 and 2015, have been noted to experience injector issues, worst of which was 06-08. These problems are often due to the common rail diesel injection system, which, while efficient, can be prone to wear and contamination over time. It's also a factor of the unique way the Toyota fires the injector - you can read more on that here (LINK)

If you own a Hilux from these years and are experiencing injector-related issues, adding the right products to your cart and seeking professional injector services can help mitigate these problems.

What changed with the different part numbers?

Toyota were aware of the knocking problem in particular, and by looking at the evolution of the part numbers that went to specific vehicles, were working hard to resolve (or at least minimise) these issues.

The initial injectors came out with no DLC (see blog post here) anywhere and a standard actuation circuit.

The first update that was offered was to change the Nozzle needle out for a unit that was DLC coated.

In the case of the problematic 06-09 injectors, the final version of the injector (23670-39316) also had very significant changes to the actuation circuit on top of the injector.

The armature and spring assembly was changed. They increased the spring tension to help the injector close, and coated the armature with DLC to also assist. What many don’t know however is that they also changed the base material (metal) composition to make it more magnetic to help the Coil overcome the higher spring closing tension.

Should I replace fuel lines with Injectors?

Should I replace fuel lines with Injectors?

Replacing fuel lines with your injectors is absolutely recommended, especially if your vehicle has high mileage. This precaution helps prevent potential contamination or damage to new injectors from the cavitation (metal pieces breaking out of the pipes and going through your new injectors)old fuel lines.

Click here to see the technical article we created on the fuel lines showing the cavitation erosion of the metal inside the pipes.

At Diesel Geeks, we can guide you through selecting the right parts and services for your Hilux, ensuring that every adventure is backed by reliability and efficiency.

How do I tell what part number I need?

You can use a website like toyodiy.com, input your VIN and get the Toyota part number. You can then use the search bar on the top of this page to be sent to the right injector for your car.

Another option is to look at the injector codes either in the ECU or on the top of the injectors. The first 2 digits of the code, is in essence, the part number of the injector. If it starts with an:

  • 11 - Hilux 1KD Euro3 05-06 Injector (095000-8290)
  • 13 - Hilux 1KD Euro4 06-09 Injector (095000-7780)
  • 18 - Hilux 1KD Euro4 09-15 Injector (295050-0460)
  •
