Why is it only Toyotas that seem to ‘Cold Knock’?
We have a detailed blog post about this at Diesel Geeks, but the short answer is that the electrical profile that they use to fire the injectors is different from virtually all other Denso Injection system users, and as a result, Toyota is unique in their suffering from the Cold knock issue.

Carbon Build Up in Intake Manifold
Another issue that plagues all D4D engines is the buildup of Carbon within the Intake manifold of the engine - eventually making your engine asthmatic!!
This build up occurs when the Oil mist from the crankcase breather mixes with the Soot returned via the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Device. This mixes together to form a thick black ‘mud’ like substance that builds up until it starts blocking air flow within the engine.

Denso injection Systems
All Toyota D4D engines in Australia make use of the Denso Common Rail Fuel Injection systems. In my opinion, this is the most accurate and involved engineering solution which yields the best results, but also some ‘achilles heels’. If you know about these issues, you will be well rewarded in terms of power and performance.
