Why do 1KD hilux Turbos fail?
There are many reasons that these units rail.
The top three causes are:
- Oil Supply to the turbocharger.
- Too many mods resulting in low-load over-boost.
- Overboosting with ECU mapping or tuning.

How to look after your 1KD turbo?
Looking after your 1KD turbo is pretty simple. IF you require a new turbo, its important to understand that these rarely fail during normal service - so it’s important to get to the bottom of what went wrong.

Cutting to the chase, the right turbo for you will have more to do with your driving style, the vehicle itself and what you want from the tuned engine.
Heavy 4wd with 33’s will require a more responsive turbo and more bottom end. 2wd single cabs and afford to go a little larger, and therefore a little more laggier with their set up, but will make peak HP more efficiently.
Can I replace just the hilux turbo stepper motor,
or do I have to replace the whole turbo?
You can purchase 1KD hilux Stepper motors now. Whilst these units can just simply bolt on, you have to be aware that the VNT position is a very fine adjustment and you’re unlikely to get it ‘prefect’ without the use of a flow bench.
That said, many will replace on the side of the motor and have a result that is indistinguishable from the original performance. I’d suggest that only those using boost gauges or scan gauges attempt this however as you will be able to see if its going wrong.
